Georgia Heritage Grant Program

grant project: Chickamauga Mason Lodge #221

Located in Walker County, Chickamauga Mason Lodge #221 has been an important African American resource for the community for over 80 years.  Completed in 1924, the two-story brick building housed the local Masonic group on the second floor while the first floor was used for community gatherings.  The lodge hall served as a meeting place for several of Chickamauga's first African American organizations, including the Masons, Odd Fellows, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and Eastern Stars.  The Lodge was listed in the National Register of Historic Places for its significance in African American history, architecture, and social history.

Chickamauga Mason Lodge #221 has received two Georgia Heritage Grants for the completion of both predevelopment and development projects.  The Lodge received $2,100 in SFY 2005 to complete a preservation plan in order to assess the current condition of the building and also devise a strategy to rehabilitate the structure.  Prior to receiving grant funds, the building had been deemed unsafe for continual use due to its crumbling foundation and walls.  The preservation plan completed the important first step in the rehabilitation of the Lodge.

With its new plan in hand, the Lodge applied for and received a SFY 2007 Georgia Heritage Grant of $20,000 to stabilize and repair the foundation, walls, and windows of the historic meeting house. Once rehabilitation is complete, the second floor of the Lodge will be used as a meeting hall for the Masons and Eastern Stars.  A section of the first floor will be used to display the history of Walker County African American organizations and sites such as the Masons, Eastern Stars, VFW Camp, the Haslerig and Sons Dairy, District Hill School, and District Hill Cemetery.  The remaining section of the first floor will be used for community meetings and activities.
